Non-EU/EEA nationals (incl. KE, PH) must apply for an au pair residence permit with SIRI (application AU1/2). The permit also allows staying up to 90 days per 180 days in the Schengen area (without working there).

At least 18; must not have reached 30 at the date of application (except when changing host family). The au pair must not be married, in a stable relationship, or have children.

The Danish au pair performs between 18 and 30 h/week of domestic tasks (3 to 5 h/day, max 6 days/week). Entitled to at least 1.5 days off per week plus Danish public holidays; 2.5 paid days off per month (6 days/week) or 2.08 days (5 days/week).

Contract / Agreement

Binding au pair contract (binding the au pair and the host family) — Signed au pair contract (integral part of form AU1 / AU1-2)

SIRI (Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration) · The application must be submitted to SIRI before entering Denmark (online or via a Danish representation)

The host family must include at least one adult and one child under 18 registered at the same address (CPR) and can host only one au pair at a time (max 14-day overlap). Separated parents must both sign.

Steps

1 Reach an agreement with a Danish host family and sign the au pair contract — Host family (at least one child under 18 registered in the CPR register)
2 Create a case order ID and pay the processing fee (DKK 4,305, 2026 level) — SIRI — www.newtodenmark.dk
3 Complete the application (online form AU1/2 or paper AU1) and provide passport, birth certificate, diplomas, signed contract and proof of payment — SIRI (Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration)
4 Provide biometric data (photo and fingerprints) within 14 days at a Danish representation or an application centre — Danish diplomatic representation / SIRI
5 The family pays the Danish lessons contribution (DKK 20,900, 2026) and takes out the compulsory insurance before the permit is finally granted — Host family / SIRI

Salary / Pocket money

5,250.00–5,250.00 DKK/month

Statutory minimum pocket money: DKK 5,250/month (2026 level), no legal cap. Paid into a Danish bank account no later than the last working day of the month. Still due in case of illness; subject to tax (tax card to be requested).

Cultural-exchange scheme (outside salaried employment); pocket money is taxable

Pocket money is subject to tax: the au pair must request a tax card from the local tax centre. The family pays the insurance and the Danish lessons contribution.
