Language is the single most important matching point: families normally speak English or their own language at home, so it should be stated in writing which language the au pair will use with the children, since at school and in the neighbourhood the default is Spanish, with Valencian present in the public system. On the language side, the Centro de Lenguas of the Universitat Politècnica de València and the University of Valencia offer Spanish courses for foreigners, including intensive and evening formats that fit childcare hours. Administratively, Spain has no standalone "au pair" visa: beyond 90 days the stay falls under the estancia por estudios, au pair modality (Real Decreto 1155/2024), and a resident parent's status does not automatically extend to the au pair, who prepares a study-stay file with the Oficina de Extranjería of the Valencian Community by cita previa after obtaining the long-stay visa at the Spanish consulate. Valencia's tram, metro and bus network (Metrovalencia, EMT) covers the city and the coast cheaply, and the cost of living is noticeably lower than Madrid or Barcelona, so the private room and board provided by the family offset most of the housing cost. Because the pool of English-speaking families is smaller, clear expectations, verified references and flexibility around school pick-up times are the criteria that decide a good match. The demand has a clear calendar of its own: assignments for relocating families usually open between May and July ahead of the September school start, with a second, smaller wave in January for mid-year moves, so an au pair available for the start of the school year is well positioned. Families also differ in how much Spanish they expect from the start: some run a fully English-language household and want the au pair to reinforce that at home, while others see the au pair as a bridge into Spanish and Valencian life and ask for at least a working level of Spanish within the first months. Saying which of the two you are in the listing — and agreeing the weekly schedule around the Spanish school day, which typically runs to mid-afternoon with a long lunch break — removes most of the friction of a first placement abroad.
