Direct answer

An au pair profile that host families open, read to the end and save: a clear photo, an honest introduction and concrete proof that you can care for children. This guide tells you what to put in each section and what to avoid.

1. The photo: your first impression

Families decide whether to open your profile in two seconds. A sharp, front-facing photo with good light and no heavy filters beats any amount of text. Smile and present the person the family will actually meet.

  • One strong main photo: visible face, neutral background, natural light.
  • No party photos, sunglasses or group shots where you cannot be made out.
  • Add 2–3 more: you with children (with permission), doing an activity, in your own setting.
  • Avoid edits that change your features: trust starts with looking like yourself.

2. The introduction: what to say and how

Write in the language of your destination country, in short sentences. Families look for signs of maturity, responsibility and a genuine wish to live together, not a corporate CV.

  • Who you are in three lines: age, city and why you want to be an au pair.
  • Your real childcare experience: ages, how long, exactly what you did.
  • Your language level and willingness to learn (state your real level, not your target).
  • Your hobbies and what you bring to a family (cooking, sport, music, languages).
  • Drop empty clichés ("I love travelling") that have no proof behind them.

3. Proof that builds trust

A claim without proof does not convince. Families receiving many applications filter on verifiable facts: references, certificates and concrete availability.

  • 2–3 references from families or childcare centres with a phone number or email.
  • First-aid, childcare or language courses (with a visible certificate).
  • Real availability dates and the length you are looking for (6, 9 or 12 months).
  • A short motivation letter tailored to each family, never copy-pasted.

4. Mistakes that get a profile rejected

Many otherwise good profiles are rejected for avoidable oversights. Check yours before publishing.

  • The same copy-pasted template sent to dozens of families.
  • An inflated language level: it shows in the first video call.
  • No references, or false contact details.
  • Blurry or faceless photos and an incomplete profile.
  • Unrealistic pay or working-hour expectations.
