Au pair safety and scams: how to avoid fraud

The warning signs

• They ask for money upfront to "process the visa", "hold the place" or "arrange the contract".
• The family refuses a video call or will not show where they live.
• The promised pay is far above the country and its official figures.
• They pressure you to decide today, with no time to verify.
• The contract arrives with missing details or no real address.
• They only message, never voice or video.

How to verify before committing

Verification is quick and free. No serious family objects to you checking the facts.

• Always have at least one live video call, with the home and the children.
• Ask for 2 references from previous au pairs and actually contact them.
• Check the address on a map and that the family exists outside the chat.
• Compare the pay with the official figures of the destination country.
• Read the official consulate or ministry sources for that country.
• Never wire money to a private individual.

Documents and visa

Official steps are done with the consulate or the country authority, not through a middleman who charges to "guarantee" a visa.

• Apply for the visa at the destination country consulate.
• Be wary of anyone promising a "guaranteed" visa for a fee.
• Keep copies of your contract, insurance and tickets in a safe place.
• Tell someone you trust your route and accommodation.

If you have already paid or are at risk

• Stop sending money immediately.
• Contact your bank to try to reverse the transfer.
• Report it to the police or your national authority and keep all evidence.
• Contact your consulate if you are abroad.
