Au pair tax deductions in Europe: what families can claim

AuPair Connect — Équipe Conformité · Last updated 12 September 2026 · Reviewed by TSO

Direct answer

Can host families claim a tax credit or deduction for hosting an au pair in Europe? The honest answer: an au pair placement is a cultural exchange, not “domestic services” employment. Here is what is settled and what needs a case-by-case check.

No “personal services” tax credit

An au pair arrangement is not childcare employment in the sense of the “personal services” tax credit. The family pays a financial contribution (pocket money) and social contributions, but that alone does not open the credit.

  • No “personal services” tax credit for hosting an au pair.
  • Flat-rate social contributions on the au pair arrangements, independent of any credit.
  • Pocket money: around €280–€390/month depending on the country.
  • The scheme remains a cultural exchange, not standard childcare employment.

What must be declared

The household registers the placement and pays the flat-rate contributions defined for the scheme. These obligations are separate from any income-tax question.

  • Register the placement with the relevant body (e.g. Urssaf in France).
  • Flat-rate contribution base for the au pair arrangement.
  • Keep the hosting agreement and contribution receipts on file.

What is genuinely case-by-case

Other schemes (childcare, domestic employment) may apply to other situations, but never by turning an au pair placement into eligible domestic employment. Do not rely on blanket tax promises.

  • Check your personal situation with a qualified tax adviser.
  • Plan no benefit that an official source has not confirmed.
  • Ask the relevant tax or family-benefit authority directly.
  • Keep all documents in case of an audit.
